Survival Need

A hunting knife is basically a knife that is used during hunting, usually to prepare the game to be used as food, skinning the animal, and cutting up the meat. It is technically different from a hunting dagger which is used to kill wild game. Some hunting knives are adapted for other uses in the wild, such as a camp knife, which hunters may use as machetes or hatchets when these particular tools are not available. Hunting knives are often designed for cutting, rather than stabbing.

These knives usually have a single sharpened edge, with the blade slightly curved on most models. Some hunting knives may have a blade that has both a curved portion for skinning, and a straight portion that can be used for cutting slices of meat. Some hunting knife blades even incorporate a guthook. Most hunting knives that are designed as “Skinners” have a rounded point designed not to damage the skin as it is being removed. Most American designs are based on a smaller version of the very popular Bowie knife.

Perfect Cut

Knives are cutting tools with an exposed cutting edge or blade, hand-held or otherwise, with or without a handle. Knives were used at least two and a half million years ago, as evidenced by the Oldowan tools. Modern knives, such as Maxam knives, consist of a blade and a handle. The blade edge can be plain or serrated or a combination of both. The handle, used to grip and manipulate the blade safely, may include the tang, a portion of the blade that extends into the handle.

The Maxam pocket knife with sliding lock button features a sliding button for locking and unlocking the blade. It features exposed rivets and an aluminum handle with rubber inlays that provides a perfect home for the 420 surgical stainless steel half-serrated blade. The button on the blade allows for convenient one hand opening. This pocket knife measures 4 ½” when closed and 7 7/8″ when open. This versatile pocket knife weighs an unbelievable 6 ounces and comes gift-boxed.

Cutting Principles

Shopping for a knife sharpener is imperative in maintaining those high-quality and expensive knives. Aside from ease of cutting and slicing, maintaining sharp tools connotes to actual personal safety. The force one uses when using a dull blade often results to much more accidents than a razor-sharp knife.

A few swipes on this reliable tool are all it takes to maintain a good set of knives. Passing through these sharpeners provide safer conditions. Nobody wants to work with sub-standard tools. Nothing like a good set of knives to get it done perfectly.

Tactical Gift

At the onset of summer I planned a hunting trip with my brothers and a few of my best buddies. It was something my siblings and I looked forward to each summer back when we were little, with my father exposing us to the wonderful outdoors. And this year it was something I wanted to bring back again as an annual tradition. Reviving how we spent our vacations growing up.

One of the few gifts I received last Christmas was a set of Camillus knives. It came as a surprise from my wife, since she was not fond of these sharp and dangerous tools. I brought these folding knives to our trip and was an instant hit to my brothers and friends. Things were quicker to do with these sharp tools. Thanks to my wife for her wonderful gift.

It is best to also consider locking mechanisms. You may do the job, but may risk hurting yourself on substandard tools.

Spyderco is credited for making knives that are different. Spyderco knives may look different but they deliver high performance. The company has a million dollar testing facility with machines that examine edge retention and rust development. They also test for stress, wear and optimal heat-treating. This dedication can only result in knives that are out of the norm.

Just take a look at one of its best sellers – the Spyderco Dragonfly2. It is a mid-sized blade with ergonometric handle with a front finger choil and a spine cusp. These are terms that describe the handle that is molded with a grip pattern. It ergonomically fills the hand with a series of angles and leveraging points. It also has a clip that makes carrying in the pocket effortless and convenient.
